I am Kevin James Leugers, born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I went to Saint Antoninus in my grade school days, after which I attended Elder High School. I then chose to attend the University of Cincinnati because I was blessed with the opportunities to become part of both the University Honors Program as well as the Kolodzik Business Scholars Program. But outside of scholastic incentives, I have been a passionate Bearcats fan for a sizeable portion of my life. I am currently part of the Snowcats ski club, the First Year Leadership Program for Student Government, and a member of the Rallycats school spirit group. But although these are interesting points, they say little about who I truly am.
I am pursuing my college education because I want to become an educated man. I want to be more than a person who can understand equations or trends, I want to be a man of reason who is guided by an unending pursuit of knowledge. I love Shakespearean plays because the language is incredibly more beautiful than the scientific and brief communication style we use today and because Shakespeare proposes ideas that can redefine our perceptions of the world and, thus, how we choose to live. In the opening lines of Love's Labour's Lost, Shakespeare broaches the topic of the end purpose of studies, of why we learn. my conclusion (for now) is that we learn so that we may be the best individuals we may be - which will shape our understanding of righteousness and how we should live - so that we may ultimately create a more beautiful and perfect world.
I am pursuing a Major in Marketing because I have an interest in the creative side of persuasion and presenting ideas, but I am also pursuing a minor in Philosophy because that is where my passions lie. I love thought. I find joy in pushing my mind to think about the questions that man has contemplated for centuries and I enjoy inspiring others to think instead of mindlessly existing in a world of pleasure, where distraction seems like the only alleviation. I do not, however, see this world as empty because I have found joy in things greater than materials and wants, and that is what I want to expose to those around me; a beautiful alternative. That is where I will find meaning in life, through inspiration and enthusiasm.
I applied for the First Year Leadership Program of Student Government because I want to build a stronger sense of community on campus. I want to create a love for the University as well as a love for fellow Bearcats. In loving a fellow Bearcat, one must first realize his or her own allegiances and loyalty to our "Dear Varsity" as well as pride in our University. I want to create this community because the true beauty of humanity is seen when we come together: when we choose to join as one to pronounce a love and passion for a cause or group, we are choosing to end our distanced, self-centered lives and realize the importance of accomplishing or promoting an idea/goal that is only conquerable through unity. "No man is an island," (John Donne) and we should not be so because we are capable of creating masterpieces that demonstrate the wonders of the human mind; therefore, because we are limitless as one, I want to promote community so that we may fulfill the potential of our power. During either my third or fourth year, I plan to run for Student Government President so that I may make my dreams a reality and so that I will not lose hold of my desires as too many before us have.
After graduation, I do not know where the winds of passion will take me, but I have wanted to work at a university because I will be able to inspire countless people and because I have a deep respect for institutions of learning. I want to create righteous change.
